AMTA Statement Opposing Texas Governor’s Directive Threatening the Healthcare of Transgender Children

On February 22, 2022, Texas Governor, Greg Abbott issued a directive to the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services to begin investigating gender affirming healthcare procedures as “child abuse.” He has also ordered teachers, doctors, caregivers, and healthcare professionals, which include music therapists, to report instances of gender affirming care.

The American Music Therapy Association adamantly opposes the Governor’s directive which directly contradicts the findings of the American Medical Association (AMA), the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), the American Psychological Association (APA), and the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, all of which state that gender affirming healthcare is lifesaving and supportive of healthy child development. The scope of music therapy practice is based on the values of non-maleficence, beneficence, ethical practice; professional integrity, respect, excellence; and diversity. The Governor’s statement is an oppressive, transphobic, and dangerous initiative that is in direct conflict with AMTA's values and known science in support of safe care to vulnerable and marginalized youth.

For music therapy practices currently impacted by proposed or enacted laws, regulations, and/or policies that conflict with professional ethics, we encourage you to communicate your concerns with elected and appointed officials and stakeholders. AMTA will continue to use its voice to advocate with decision makers to ensure all music therapy clients retain access to ethical and equitable treatment options.

We stand in solidarity with our trans music therapy community and the trans community at large, supporting their right to affirming and accessible healthcare.
