AMTA Associate Editor Position Announcement and Description

Associate Editor, Research Manuscripts and Associate Editor, Book Reviews

Journal of Music Therapy

The American Music Therapy Association (AMTA) invites applicants for two new Associate Editor Positions for the Journal of Music Therapy (JMT).

Associate Editor, Research Manuscript Reviews will assist and help manage the peer review process for research manuscripts submitted to the JMT. This is a second Associate Editor position that would mirror the Associate Editor position currently held by Dr. Felicity Baker.

Associate Editor, Book Reviews will be responsible for managing the solicitation, review, and acceptance process for book reviews submitted to and published in the JMT.

Term of Service will coincide with that of the current Editor-in-Chief (EIC).  Associate Editors will begin service in July 2016, with their term ending in December 2018.

Position Descriptions

Associate Editor – With a Focus on Manuscript Review

The Associate Editor (With a Focus on Manuscript Review) is a volunteer position responsible for assisting with and managing the peer review process for research manuscript submitted to the JMT.  The Associate Editor will work closely with the Editor-In-Chief (EIC) to screen initial submissions, select and assign reviewers, manage the review process, work with the EIC to decide review outcomes, and support authors.  A central required is the ability to edit and work with authors on manuscripts, understanding the perspective, methodological integrity, and overall writing quality of each submission when doing so. Associate Editors will also meet several times each year with the EIC (conference call) and attend the annual Editorial Board meeting held during the AMTA national conference.

Applicants should possess:

  • An active publication record
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Experience in an editorial role (e.g., journal editor, book editor, thesis/doctoral supervision)
  • Experience with peer review processes (e.g.,  a reviewer)
  • Prior service on the JMT Editorial Board (preferred, but not required)
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team
  • Desire and ability to dedicate up to 5 hours per week to Associate Editor responsibilities
  • Desire to serve as an ambassador for AMTA and the music therapy profession
  • Professional Membership in the AMTA
Associate Editor, Book Reviews

The Associate Editor, Book Reviews is a volunteer position responsible for managing the solicitation, review, and acceptance process for book reviews submitted to the Journal of Music Therapy (JMT). Working closely with the EIC, the Associate Editor, Book Reviews will serve a central role in preparing, processing, and reviewing book review manuscripts. This may include writing book reviews and/or overseeing submitted book review manuscripts prepared by others. Associate Editors are expected to meet several times during the year with the EIC (conference call) and attend the annual Editorial Board meeting held during the AMTA national conference.

Applicants should possess:

  • Experience with the journal review process (i.e., as a reviewer and author)
  • Experience as a book review author
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Prior service on an Editorial Board (preferred, but not required)
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team
  • Desire and ability to dedicate effort in support of publishing regular book reviews in the JMT
  • Desire to serve as an ambassador for AMTA and the music therapy profession
  • Professional Membership in the AMTA

The Book Review Editor is responsible for the following tasks:

  • Identify books for potential review in JMT
  • Obtain and/or receive review copies from publishers, AMTA National Office and Editor in Chief (EIC)
  • Develop, in cooperation with the EIC, Book Review Guidelines
  • Develop book reviews suitable for publication in JMT
  • Identify potential book reviewer/authors and solicit submissions for book reviews
    • Transmit to potential reviewer/authors Book Review Guidelines
    • Acknowledge the receipt of a submitted book review; provide information about the status of its editorial review, as necessary
    • Provide feedback to the author of the book review. Convey the editorial decision (accept for publication, revise and resubmit, or reject), made in consultation with the EIC, and provide guidance to the author for revisions, if appropriate
  • Process book review manuscripts though ScholarOne and subsequent readiness for online and print production.
