Music Therapy Perspectives and the Journal of Music Therapy invite applicants for a new Assistant Editor position (one position for each journal).

Job Description

The Assistant Editor is a volunteer position responsible for assisting with tasks within the journals, serving an important role of helping to improve the timeliness of the review process and journal communications. The Assistant Editor will work closely with the lead Editor in order to manage tasks including pre-screening manuscripts, communications, and managing manuscript timelines. The Assistant Editor will meet regularly with the lead Editor and is involved in communications and meetings with the editorial team.

Term of Service

The term of service coincides with that of the lead Editor through 2022 and is subject to extension in cooperation with the lead Editor. This would be an appointment position, beginning with an orientation in August, 2021. Professional Membership: Current professional membership in the American Music Therapy Association is provided gratis as a benefit of service to the journal and the mission of AMTA.

Duties and Responsibilities

Assist the Editor with:

  • Pre-screening manuscripts in Scholar One
  • Tracking manuscript review timelines and progress
  • Peer reviewer orientation and helping to provide reviewer feedback
  • Managing the mentorship program
  • Writing biannual reports for the AMTA board
  • Communicating with the editorial board members
  • Organizing meetings of the editorial teams
Required Qualifications
  • An active publication record
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Experience with peer review processes (e.g., an author and/or reviewer)
  • Demonstrated ability to work on a team
  • Desire and ability to dedicate an average of 3-4 hours each week to Assistant Editor responsibilities
  • Desire to serve as an ambassador for AMTA and the music therapy profession
Preferred Qualifications
  • Completion of a Doctorate
  • Prior service on the respective Editorial Board
  • Experience in an editorial role (e.g., journal editor, book editor, thesis/doctoral supervision)
