Message from the AMTA Board of Directors

October 6, 2021 01:53 PM

Dear Music Therapy Community,

The American Music Therapy Association (AMTA) Board of Directors recognizes that recent and some long-standing matters have not been addressed to community satisfaction. We are aware that our community wants and expects more. We have failed through insufficient processes, lack of clarity, and incomplete movement on matters regarding diversity, equity, inclusion and ableism. We recognize this has caused increased tension and confusion which has led to feelings of distrust in the organization. We apologize to community members who feel we have not supported you, believed you, listened to you, or adequately addressed matters of importance to you.

The association has entered into a number of important conversations to gain more understanding of where gaps within communications, actions, and expectations exist. Due to the confidential nature of some matters, AMTA is limited as to what can be shared. We will continue to seek understanding of how our systems and processes, intended to support association efforts and concerns, have caused harm and warrant review as we work to move the association forward.

AMTA Board of Directors
