MT-BC Included in CA's Special Education Regulations

May 27, 2014 07:44 AM

Congratulations to members of the California Music Therapy Task Force, whose advocacy leadership over the past five years, along with grassroots participation from state music therapists, has resulted in the inclusion of the MT-BC credential in the state's Special Education Regulations. This not only marks the first time the credential has been included in California regulations, but it also allows music therapists in the state to apply for Non Public Agency (NPA) status, a designation that will allow students who have an IEP to more easily access music therapy services. Many thanks to current and former task force members, including Tara McConnell, Rachel Firchau Gonzalez, Celeste Keith, Rachel McCauley, Cathy Riviera, Karen Sanchez, Jody Wilfong, Roberta Adler, Stephan Betz, Michelle Kimmerling, Michelle Lazar, and Chanel Nakamura for advocating for the profession and the clients we serve.

For more information about these regulations, please visit:

California music therapists can apply as a "Non Public Agency" (NPA) if working in special education and providing services through IEPs.  Please apply as a "NEW" applicant, even if you have previously held NPA status.
