Each year, the AMTA Board of Directors honors two deserving individuals with the Lifetime Achievement Award. The 2023 recipients are Barbara Else, MPA, MT-BC and Dr. Edward Kahler, MT-BC.

On February 13, 2024, the AMTA Board of Directors received the Final Report of the AMTA Commission on the Education and Clinical Training of 21st Century Music Therapists. This report makes recommendations about the future of education and clinical training in our field. As many know the AMTA Archives is housed at Colorado State University. A scrapbook with mold damage was donated to CSU as part of the American Music Therapy Association (AMTA) special archive collection. The donor received the scrapbook from Florence Tyson (a music therapist in New York from 1958 and 1995).

Congressman David Scott (GA-13), was joined by Representatives Mary Gay Scanlon (PA-05), Maxwell Frost (FL-10), and Donald M. Payne Jr. (NJ-10) to introduce the Reimagining Inclusive Arts Education Act. This critical piece of legislation provides professional development grants to arts educators and creative arts therapists to best include students with disabilities.

Online Scam & Phishing Awareness Online scams and attempts at phishing continue to skyrocket. Be wary of online requests for money, gift cards, personal information, to open an attachment, or respond to a healthcare alert, etc. We have received reports of emails that impersonate leaders of AMTA, offers of free grand pianos and phishing attempts to initiate contacts for private music therapy services.

In 2023, the AMTA Board of Directors, Membership Committee, and Assembly of Delegates worked collaboratively to lower membership rates for music therapy students and retired music therapists as well as create a tier-based membership model for professional music therapists.

AMTA is excited to announce the 2023 recipient of the Arthur Flagler Fultz Research Award: Congratulations to Dr. Helen Shoemark, Dr. Anthony Meadows and team for their 2023 Arthur Flagler Fultz Research Award winning proposal “National Outcomes Measurement for Music Therapy (NOM-MT) in Acute Healthcare Settings: Phase 1 - A Descriptive Analysis of One Year of Music Therapy Services in a Pediatric and Adult Hospital.”
