Possible Recall on Power Banks

The American Music Therapy Association announced a new product this year, called a “Recharge with Music Therapy Power Bank” to recharge cell phones and other devices. We have recently learned of a recall on some power bank models similar to the one that was provided on our website at www.musictherapy.org and at the AMTA conference in 2014.  According to the recall notice sent from the manufacturer, the products AMTA distributed are most likely NOT covered by the recall.  None of the remaining products in AMTA’s inventory are subject to the recall; however, we want to be extra cautious. If you purchased a purple “Recharge with Music Therapy” power bank, please read this important recall notice below and check your device. If your product is covered by the recall, please discontinue using it and contact AP Specialties at the toll free contact information below for a replacement.

Re:  Important Product Safety Recall of Certain AP Specialties’ Power Banks

Dear Power Bank Recipient:

It is possible that you may have received an AP Specialties’ Power Bank (a self-contained energy source used to charge cell phones and other devices when an electrical outlet is not available) as a promotional item at a meeting, trade show or industry convention held between November 2013 and August 2014.   The Power Banks being recalled have the potential to overheat when being charged or when charging another device, posing a fire hazard.

Please read the remainder of this letter to determine if you may have one of the Power Banks that is being recalled. 

Look at the side of your Power Bank.  The unit being recalled is rectangular in shape and measures approximately 3.6 inches long by 1 inch high by 1 inch wide.  It has a white top and the sides are either black, dark blue, lime green, light blue, orange, pink, purple, red, white or yellow.

You will not find AP Specialties’ name on the Power Bank, but rather you will find the name and/or logo of the company or organization that distributed the Power Bank. 

Look at the top of the Power Bank.  If your Power Bank has a dot after the letter “V” (see below) it is not being recalled.  If your Power Bank has a dot after the letter “V” it may be among the units being recalled.
