In January 2014, dozens of music therapy bloggers and podcasters working with with the American Music Therapy Association (AMTA) and Certification Board for Music Therapists (CBMT) successfully spread the word about music therapy advocacy and the State Recognition Operational Plan through multiple social media channels. This year, we explored and honored the music therapy profession as a distinct profession, unique from other professions and professionals with which we work.

We are...music therapists!

About the Joint AMTA/CBMT Music Therapy State Recognition Initiative

Since 2005, the American Music Therapy Association (AMTA) and the Certification Board for Music Therapists (CBMT) have collaborated on the State Recognition Operational Plan. The primary purpose of this plan is to increase access to services by getting music therapy and the MT-BC credential recognized by state governments, departments, and agencies. The AMTA Government Relations staff and CBMT Regulatory Affairs staff provide guidance and technical support to state task forces throughout the country as they work towards state recognition. To date, their work has resulted in 44 active state task forces, the creation of 3 music therapist licenses, the regular filing of bills that formally recognize music therapy through the creation of title protection, registry, state certification, or licensure, and a growing base of music therapy advocates and supporters. Learn more about the State Recognition Operational Plan on the AMTA and CBMT websites.
