Robin Spielberg, American pianist, composer, and Artist Spokesperson for the AMTA, was in Oxford, OH, as an "artist in residence" for a week in late October, 2017. Robin spoke to Miami University students, senior citizens, and children at a local school, expressing her joy in music and praising the power and importance of music and music therapy. Music therapist Debbie Benkovitz Williams presented with Robin.

The AMTA Board of Directors met at the Maritime Institute outside of Baltimore, MD for approximately 23 hours during the 2017 Mid-Year meeting, from May 31 through June 5. Read on for meeting highlights.​
 
AMTA worked with three national coalitions - including sixty (60) national rehabilitation and disability organizations - to host a Congressional briefing on the value of rehabilitation and habilitation services and devices. As Congress considers health care reform, it is critical that people with injuries, illnesses, and disabilities have continued access to rehabilitative and habilitative care.

Howard University student Maya Rogers is a recipient of the Formation Scholars award, a scholarship for women created by Beyoncé! Last year Maya, a successful musician with many film & commercial credits, visited the AMTA national office & spent time with Administrative Coordinator & music therapist Dianne Wawrzusin, exploring her interest in music therapy. Dianne & Beyoncé were both impressed, & the $25,000 scholarship will help Maya finish her studies & begin a new chapter in her life.

The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. held a two-day event, “Sound Health: Music and the Mind,” honoring the power of music and music therapy. Kicked off with a National Symphony Orchestra concert on June 2nd, June 3rd featured a full day of sessions with interactive presentations and shows, including one curated by Dr. Sheri Robb, “Breakthroughs with Music Therapy: Recovery, Resilience, Quality of Life.”

This year, the National Memorial Day Concert honored Capt. Luis Avila, a military policeman severely injured after an IED explosion. During the performance segment, featuring acclaimed singer Renée Fleming, a special moment was dedicated to the importance of music therapy services for veterans. Capt. Avila and music therapist, Rebecca Vaudreuil, joined Ms. Fleming on stage to recognize the importance of music therapy in the rehabilitation of America's veterans.

Sheri Robb and Amanda Henley discuss research and clinical practice implications of pilot study findings and details about the continuation of this study with research funded by a $1.4 million National Institutes of Nursing Research grant. Research on the use of music therapy for post-operative pain management conducted by Kirsten Nelson, MA, MT-BC, Mary Adamek, PhD, MT-BC and Charmaine Kleiber, PhD, RN, FAAN is available in the latest edition of Pain Management Nursing. The American Music Therapy Association provided funding for this project through the 2012 Clinician Based Research Award.

The National Institutes of Health, the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, and renowned soprano, Renée Fleming, launched a new partnership with an historic research workshop, “Music and the Brain: Research Across the Lifespan,” on January 26-27, 2017. Attended by some 100 participants, the NIH workshop included 25 panelists--leading neuroscientists and clinicians, 8 of whom were music therapists.​

Dozens of music therapy bloggers and podcasters successfully spread the word about music therapy advocacy through Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube blogs, and podcasts. Their work contributes to a national project facilitated by AMTA and CBMT as part of the joint AMTA-CBMT State Recognition Operational Plan. The January 2017 project theme centered on how music therapists can incorporate a spirit of mindfulness to their advocacy efforts.

As of January 1, 2016, music therapy is a licensed profession in Oregon. Beginning in 2007, efforts of dozens of music therapists, working with the guidance of government relations experts from AMTA and CBMT, resulted in Oregon licensure in 2016. Podcast speakers talk about that process, and they overview the necessary follow-up of the licensing legislation while encouraging music therapists in other states to step up to the plate and work diligently toward licensure.

The American Music Therapy Association and the Certification Board for Music Therapists are excited to announce that, on April 26, 2016, Governor Fallin of Oklahoma signed into law HB 2820. This legislation creates a music therapy license under the State Board of Medical Licensure and Supervision.

We are saddened to learn of the death of Dr. Oliver Sacks, noted neurologist and acclaimed author. The American Music Therapy Association and the entire music therapy community is deeply indebted to Dr. Sacks for his research, books, and numerous appearances around the world. His body of work helped to highlight the science behind music therapy and to shine a light on the important work of board certified music therapists.

Board certified music therapists affiliated with University Hospitals Case Medical Center along with colleagues at Case Western Reserve University and Geisinger Health System published a study in the current issue of "Journal of Clinical Oncology" examining the use of a music therapist-facilitated perioperative protocol on outcomes among oncology patients undergoing ambulatory breast surgery.

As a study bill, this legislation creates a Music Therapy Advisory Group charged with exploring the feasibility of regulating music therapy practice in Illinois & submitting a findings report & recommendations to the state. Many thanks to the members of the Illinois Task Force and to all music therapists in Illinois for their work, dedication, & advocacy for this legislation.

This innovative and interesting research symposium, “IMPROVING ACCESS AND QUALITY: MUSIC THERAPY RESEARCH 2025,” included an array of topics designed to stimulate conversation and input to offer recommendations and guidance for future research to advance the profession of music therapy forward.
