AMTA appreciates ongoing efforts of clinicians, educators, and students to provide safe music therapy interventions in healthcare and education settings. Facilities rely on federal, state, local, and business recommendations regarding infection control measures to protect patients, residents, and personnel. This document provides some additional resources members might find helpful when implementing strategies and advocating for the use of live music in clinical environments.

Michelle Hairston was introduced to music therapy as a toddler. Her dad, Dr. Olin Parker, studied at University of Kansas with Dr. E. Thayer Gaston, the "Father of Music Therapy." Dr. Gaston took time over the dinner table one evening to tell her about the ins and outs of a career in music therapy, firmly convincing Michelle of her career path. Michelle tells the story of her professional life and of the "of course you can!" encouragement she received from several key figures.
 
Music Therapy License Established in Maryland

The American Music Therapy Association and the Certification Board for Music Therapists are excited to announce that Maryland SB 82 was enacted into law on June 2, 2021. This bill creates a music therapy license, which will be overseen by the newly expanded Board of Audiologists, Hearing-Aid Dispensers, Speech-Language Pathologists, and Music Therapists.

Suzanne Hanser says our music therapy careers allow us to “share our time, creativity, imagination, and compassion with others” while at the same time learning from all we meet. She has a long and illustrious career as a student, clinician, professor, author, speaker, researcher, and volunteer leader in professional associations and she shares insights gained from individuals facing challenges in their lives, as well as fulfilling time spent with colleagues and students over the years.
