What Is AMTA?

AMTA was formed in 1998 through the unification of two organizations: The National Association for Music Therapy (NAMT), founded in 1950, and the American Association for Music Therapy (AAMT), founded in 1971. Together, these roots reflect decades of dedication to the profession.

Today, AMTA carries that legacy forward. We work to strengthen the profession, expand access to services, and help more people experience the benefits of music therapy.

Who Are Music Therapists?

Music therapists are specially trained to assess, treat, and evaluate people across ages, backgrounds, and needs. Sessions are tailored to each client using methods such as guided listening, familiar music, music creation, and improvisation.

These personalized approaches can support communication, especially for those who find verbal expression difficult. Research also shows music therapy can be effective across many areas of health, wellness, and development.
