What Your Membership Helps Make Possible

Here’s where your membership dollars go, what they help fund, how they’re put to work, and the meaningful difference they make in supporting the programs, resources, services, and initiatives that strengthen our community and move our mission forward.

Advocacy

AMTA works to raise public awareness of music therapy and to expand access to quality services. Our legislative advocacy runs at both the federal and state levels, all aimed at earning greater recognition for the profession.

We also stand behind you. AMTA supports members as they advocate for music therapy in their own communities and careers.

Research

Strong research keeps our profession moving forward, and AMTA invests in it heavily.

We fund member-led research through programs like the Arthur Flagler Fultz Research Award, which supports early-stage music therapy research. We also publish two peer-reviewed partner journals that keep the field informed, connected, and growing:

  • The Journal of Music Therapy (JMT): Advances music therapy research and theory across diverse scholarly approaches.
  • Music Therapy Perspectives (MTP): Advances clinical practice through practice-focused scholarship on clinical benefits, innovation, education and training, and ethical, culturally responsive, social justice–informed discourse.

Together, these journals highlight emerging evidence, share clinically relevant insights, and help translate research into everyday practice. As a member, you get full access to both journals at no extra cost.

Resources

Your membership unlocks tools, connections, and opportunities designed to support your work and your growth.

Communications

AMTA keeps you in the loop with resources, tools, and educational materials to strengthen and promote your practice. The music therapy community receives monthly Community Updates and Government Relations News, while members also get a quarterly update from the Board of Directors.

You’ll find these updates by email and across our social media channels. Want a quick way to stay current? Bookmark our Linktree to keep track of everything AMTA is doing.

Symposium (AMTA-U)

Connection matters, and AMTA makes it easy. Our online education platform, AMTA-U, hosts the annual Symposium, a multi-day online event that blends professional development with social connection.

Sessions combine real-time and asynchronous learning, and registrants keep access for four months after the event.

Regional Conferences

AMTA has seven regional chapters, each offering at least one point of connection per year in a conference format. Some host full in-person events, others go hybrid, and some reimagine the conference experience entirely. Every one offers a chance to learn and connect with colleagues. Members receive discounts on conference registration.

AMTAS & Passages

American Music Therapy Association Students (AMTAS) is the student arm of AMTA, with seven student chapters organized by region. Each year, AMTAS hosts Passages, a student-focused conference created by students, for students. Most AMTA regions also offer a regional Passages conference.

Bookstore

AMTA publishes trusted research that shows how music therapy works and the benefits it delivers, giving you the tools to advocate with clients, organizations, and decision-makers.

Members receive discounts on AMTA publications, plus complimentary access to select titles. Simply log in to your account and visit the bookstore.

AMTA Job Center

Your membership dollars help power the AMTA Job Center. We make it easy to search for music therapy positions across the United States and around the world, connecting board-certified music therapists with employers who understand the true value of music therapy.

For employers: Submit your job posting through our online form. Employers provide postings, which AMTA reviews before publishing. AMTA makes no claim to the accuracy of any posting. If you have questions about a listing, please contact the employer directly.

For job seekers: Browse our job current listings here. Enter a keyword, choose your preferred location, and hit search to explore open music therapy jobs.
