Why Give to AMTA?

The American Music Therapy Association (AMTA) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to advancing awareness of music therapy and expanding access to quality services.

Your gift supports advocacy, education, research, and access to music therapy for people of all ages.

Music therapy serves an estimated 1.9 million people across 36,000 facilities nationwide. Your support helps AMTA:

  • Reach 20,000+ people with awareness and resources
  • Represent 9,000+ board-certified music therapists
  • Support 1,400+ members through education and networking
  • Develop 100+ hours of educational content each year
  • Award $25,000+ annually for scholarships and research

Advocacy & Policy

AMTA’s government relations efforts raise awareness of music therapy among elected officials, policymakers, and key stakeholders who shape recognition and reimbursement policy. With stronger policy support comes greater access – for both music therapists and the people they serve.

State Recognition Expands Access

AMTA and the Certification Board for Music Therapists (CBMT) lead an effort to strengthen state recognition of music therapy and the MT-BC credential. This work protects the public from unqualified practitioners and expands access to care. Now, 16 states have licensure, while 4 have title protection, registry, or state certification, and more than 40 state task forces are advancing recognition and regulations.

Education, Research & Scholarships

AMTA builds and shares a robust portfolio of evidence-based research and provides professional development opportunities through the annual online symposium and our education platform AMTA-U to help music therapists deliver high-quality services. Scholarship and grant opportunities are offered each year to support clinicians, researchers, and students – with a focus on diversity, equity, inclusion, and access.
