This bill creates a music therapy license within the Department of Health and establishes a Music Therapy Advisory Committee to assist the Department in matters concerning the license.

Carol Collins 1927 – 2022 It is with deep sadness that we share the death of Carol Collins, a beloved music therapy pioneer and educator. She was one of the first music therapy interns to train with Dr. Ira Altshuler during the late 1940’s at Eloise Hospital (later named Wayne County General Hospital and Infirmary) in Detroit, Michigan.

The National Endowment for the Arts and the University of California, San Francisco, launches the Sound Health Network (SHN), a collaboration with the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, and Renée Fleming, the center’s artistic advisor. The SHN will promote research and public awareness about the impact of music on health and wellness. This online event will take place on Tuesday, January 26, 2021 at 5 p.m. ET/2 p.m. PT.

Due to this, the government relations teams from AMTA and CBMT created a survey to better understand music therapists’ response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The information provided will be utilized to help inform advocacy efforts related to professional practice and state recognition. All MT-BCs received an email invitation to participate. The purpose of this plan is to get music therapy and the MT-BC credential recognized by individual states so clients can more easily access music therapy services. As Congress considers health care reform, it is critical that people with injuries, illnesses, and disabilities have continued access to rehabilitative and habilitative care.

Theodore Michael Meyer was a music lover and a student of guitar. Due to a biking accident, Theo suffered from chronic pain throughout most of his 20s. Theo benefited from Music Therapy as part of his treatment and considered going back to school to study Music Therapy to help others. Theo's family hopes that this scholarship will go to a student interested in helping individuals with mental health and/or addiction issues find a path to wellness and inspiration through the joy of music.

Since 2005, AMTA and CBMT have collaborated on a State Recognition Operational Plan. The primary purpose of this plan is to get music therapy and the MT-BC credential recognized by individual states so that citizens can more easily access our services.The AMTA Government Relations staff and the CBMT Regulatory Affairs staff provide guidance and technical support to state task forces throughout the country as they work towards state recognition.

In November 2013, the AMTA Assembly of Delegates passed a revision of the Professional Competencies. This revision includes 3 new competencies as well as streamlined music foundation competencies. Due to the new competencies, the Assembly voted to make them effective on August 1, 2015. This allows academic programs and internship sites to update curriculum and documents. Music therapist Kathleen Brown brings music to Baylor Scott and White Cancer Center to help patients struggling with their treatments. “Alive Inside,” the film that portrays personalized music listening for elders in nursing homes, is currently being shown around the country. AMTA has developed a status report and resource to assist our members and others as they deal with the results of this film and organization, including new or increased interest in providing access to music and music therapy as well as some confusion and misunderstanding about the differences between music listening and clinical music therapy.

AMTA-member, Professor Ed Roth, MM, MT-BC, of Western Michigan University, presented preliminary information from a pilot fMRI study examining mechanisms for improvisation in children at the recent annual meeting of the APA. His research partner, Dr. Charles Limb, is a renowned otolaryngologist and musician at Johns Hopkins University. The session was sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA).

The work of AMTA-member, Tom Sweitzer, MT-BC, was portrayed in a Washington Post feature article. Tom began his career as a music educator with training in musical theater. His work with adolescents convinced him that he needed to go back and get an equivalency in music therapy, which he did and subsequently opened a music therapy center in Middleburg, VA. His center, "A Place To Be" is the focus of an upcoming documentary, "High Notes."

AMTA is pleased to announce that a presentation/seminar will be held April 23, 2014, on the topic of music therapy and oncology. This meeting was requested by Dr. Avi Rasooly, Program Director, National Institutes of Health (NIH), National Cancer Institute (NCI), Office of Cancer Complementary and Alternative Medicine (OCCAM). Dr. Rasooly requested a seminar and presentation on current research in music therapy and oncology for the benefit of the staff and interested program officers of the NIH.​

AMTA and CBMT are excited to announce that on Tuesday, April 1, 2014, Governor Gary Herbert of Utah signed into law HB 277. This legislation creates a state certification designation for board certified music therapists granted by Utah’s Division of Occupational and Professional Licensing.

Theo's family hopes that this scholarship will go to a student interested in helping individuals with mental health and/or addiction issues find a path to wellness and inspiration through the joy of music. New York music therapists now have an official "clarification letter" from the New York State Education Department regarding the recognition of music therapy as a related service under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), the federal special education law. This letter will be instrumental in supporting the provision of quality music therapy services in school districts throughout the state for any child found to be in need of music therapy.

Lisa Gallagher resigned as AMTA Vice President Elect so that she could focus on her health and family. The AMTA Board of Directors wholeheartedly supports her decision and wishes her well. Per the AMTA Bylaws, the Board approved the appointment of Amber Weldon-Stephens to assume the role of Vice President Elect immediately, moving into the role of Vice President on January 1, 2014.

The AMTA Board approved the recommendation of the Research Committee review panel, whose recommendation was to fund the research project:: “Effect of Music Assisted Relaxation Pre-Operative Training on Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis (AIS) Patients’ Pain Perception after Spinal Fusion (SF) Surgery,” as the recipient of the 2012 AMTA Clinician Based Grant. The Primary Investigator is Kirsten Nelson, MT-BC, from the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.

Kaplan Music Fund will fund music therapy services among children affected by the Newtown, CT shooting. The program involves the clinical use of music in a medical setting to accomplish therapeutic goals such as pain management, anxiety reduction and physical rehabilitation. New AMTA-pro podcast, "Debbie Dacus: Music Therapy from Different Angles." Debbie has 25 years of clinical experience, has published several books and coauthored several music therapy resources, and is currently preparing to teach at the university level. In this podcast, Debbie shares compelling stories from her daily work and talks with about lessons learned from her experiences in music and in music therapy over the years.

In a historic 5 to 4 decision, the Supreme Court today upheld the Affordable Care Act (ACA). The individual mandate was ruled constitutional, allowing health reform and the Medicaid expansion to move forward. AMTA will continue to monitor implementation of the Affordable Care Act and advocate for our members as implementation moves forward.

The producers of the scheduled music therapy segment for the Monday night edition (4/9) of NBC Nightly News have contacted AMTA and apologized for postponing the broadcast. “It looks like we will not be airing this story after all. Another story came up, and they don't plan to run it in the immediate future as of now." AMTA will keep you informed as to when the story is rescheduled. As you know, this commonly happens with media productions.

The story features the work of AMTA member Jodi Levine with the elderly at the Avery Heights Health Care Center in Hartford, CT. NBC worked with many other therapists including Kat Fulton, Cathy Knoll and Ronna Kaplan and is interested in doing more. AMTA presented Kenneth E. Bruscia as the William W. Sears Distinguished Lecture Series Speaker at the annual AMTA conference in Atlanta, Georgia in November, 2011. Dr. Bruscia’s lecture, “Ways of Thinking in Music Therapy,” is an analysis of various ways of thinking about the respective roles of music, therapist, and client, and how these roles are configured in different models and styles of music therapy practice.
 
The Department of Labor's Employment and Training Administration (ETA) has worked with technical and subject matter experts from education, business, and industry to develop a comprehensive competency model for the Allied Health industry sector. AMTA participated as a Validator and Industry Champion in the Model development process.

The Department of Health and Human Services announces the Health Care Innovation Challenge from the CMS Innovation Center, a new initiative designed to test creative ways to deliver high quality medical care and reduce costs across the country. The Challenge will award up to $1 billion in total grants to applicants who will implement the most compelling new ideas to deliver better health, improved care and lower costs to people enrolled in Medicare, Medicaid and CHIP.

At the General Business meetings Atlanta proposed changes to the Articles of Incorporation and to the AMTA Bylaws will be brought to the membership. Both documents are important to AMTA, and when changes or amendments are needed, the AMTA membership votes. Please read on for a discussion of the proposed changes.

The Combating Autism Reauthorization Act (CARA) of 2011, was signed into law on September 30, 2011 by President Obama. The law authorizes $693 million in continued federal investment over three years for autism research, treatment and services.

Ten years ago we gasped and held our collective breath. Music therapists slowly exhaled, gathered together, and set forth on a journey of healing and hope that continues today. The policy adopted unanimously by the Assembly of Delegates in 2010 states that AMTA and its regions will use acronyms only for academic degrees, MT-BC, other credentials (e.g., NCC, CCC-SLP), licenses (e.g., LCAT, LMHC), state registries (e.g., WMTR), National Music Therapy Registry designations until 2020, and music therapy professional designations from other countries. AMTA encourages its members to limit their use of acronyms to credentials and designations in this list.
