Global Perspectives Session at the AMTA Conference

The International Relations Committee welcomes submissions for consideration for the Global Perspectives Session at the AMTA Conference.  The session showcases international music therapy projects, scholarly work and service opportunities from around the world.   Previous sessions have highlighted both professional and student experiences.  Please email Flossie Ierardi at with your ideas for 2017 by July 1.

Participate in the 2017 Internship Fair

Saturday, November 18th, 7:30 – 9:00 am

Internship Directors who are registered for the conference are invited to take part! Participants will be given poster board space for presentations about their internship sites.  A limited number of round tables will be available for displays and interviews.  More information will be available soon. Space is limited and Sites will not be published in the final program. Call for Research Poster Session Abstract Submissions

Individuals are encouraged to submit content information and abstracts describing works in progress and/or completed works for Oral Presentation (Paper) or Poster Presentation. Diverse methodologies are encouraged.Submission deadline is June 15, 2017 by 5 pm CST.

Format Options

Authors must submit abstracts as “Paper only”, “Poster Only”, or “Paper or Poster” by indicating preference during the submission process. Researchers are encouraged to submit using the “Paper or Poster” option. Abstracts submitted using this option will be considered and selected for either option by the Research Committee.

Oral Presentations (Paper Presentations)

Individual oral papers provide researchers the opportunity to present original work related to music therapy. Presenters will have 15-minutes to present and 5 minutes to answer questions from attendees. Oral Presentations will be scheduled during a Concurrent Session time block Saturday, November 18 from 11:15am to 12:30pm.

Research Poster Presentations

The Research Poster Session provides an interactive forum for researchers to discuss their work with conference attendees.

The Research Poster Session is Saturday, November 18 from 2:00 to 4:00pm. Presenters will be assigned a location to put up each poster, and posters will be organized by topic as related to MTR 2025 goals.

Student Awards

Music therapy students are eligible for best poster awards. Abstracts will be published in Music Therapy Perspectives.

One undergraduate and one graduate submission will be chosen.

In order to be considered for this award, indicate in the submission online process if the first author is a music therapy student and what level (undergraduate, masters/masters equivalency, doctoral) and if you wish to be considered for this award.

Submission Process

This year, the AMTA Research Committee is pilot testing an online submission process through SurveyMonkey. We ask that you complete the submission process AND upload a one page abstract (see below) as we begin making the transition.

The information requested in the online submission process will be comparable to what is requested on the abstract and the Research Committee suggests that you write the abstract as outlined below and then input the corresponding information into the online submission process as we pilot test this process.

Abstract Content and Format

Uploaded abstracts are limited to one page. All abstracts must be formatted with 1 inch margins; 11-pt font or larger for narrative, 10-point or larger for figures and tables.

Please respond to the following prompts/heading including the following information in the abstract and online submission process (as relevant):

The following bullets will correspond to questions on the online submission process and we ask that you design your abstract accordingly for submission and review by the AMTA Research Committee.

  • Introduction, objective, phenomenon under investigation, hypotheses or research questions
  • Description of rigorous and relevant research methods (e.g. qualitative, quantitative, mixed methods, systematic reviews, theoretical frameworks, philosophical papers)
  • Description of research participants if applicable and data gathering methods
  • If the study is completed: Description of the data analysis and results,Summary of findings supported by presented data presented
  • If the study is in progress: Description of intended data analysis, Statement of how the research advances music therapy clinical practice.

Each submission must include complete information for judging research quality.

  1. Submissions must be received through the online submission process with uploaded abstract included as a component of that process.
  2. Use the following format for the abstract uploaded file name during submission proces: AuthorLastName_First Name_Topic.pdf (for example: Colwell_Cindy_OrffMT.pdf)
  3. On the uploaded abstract INCLUDE ONLY the title. DO NOT include authors’ name or affiliations.

The deadline for submissions is JUNE 15, 2017. If, after 5 days of submission you have not received a confirmation of your submission being received contact Cindy Colwell by email at or phone (785) 864-9635.

After a blind review by the committee, each corresponding author will be notified via email by July 31 of acceptance or rejection of the submission.

Conference Policies

Cancellation/Refund Policy: 

Activities are planned in advance based on the number of registrants.  Full refunds cannot be made. Refunds for cancellations of any conference activities (including additional courses, trainings, institutes, CMTE courses, and others) are available by written request only and must be mailed to the AMTA national office. 80% of fees will be refunded if the request is postmarked no later than 10/01/17, 50% if the request is postmarked 10/02/17–11/01/17. NO REFUNDS will be made after 11/01/17, so please plan ahead. Refunds are processed 45 days after the conclusion of the conference. Usually this will occur in Nov./Dec./Jan.  You are responsible for providing a valid postal address where your check may be sent. Please present this check to your bank for payment as soon as possible in order to insure you are able to access the funds.  Note that most banks will not cash checks older than 90 days so you should plan to present your check for payment as soon as you receive it.  Checks uncashed after 120 days will be voided.

CMTE and Other Additional Courses:

CMTE courses are offered at a low-cost rate in conjunction with the conference. To enroll in a CMTE course, you must be registered for the conference on at least the day in which the CMTE course is scheduled. Pre- and post-conference trainings and other additional course opportunities (with the exception of courses noted free for current AMTA members registered for the conference) do not require conference registration, however it is not possible to register for these courses online without conference registration.  Call the AMTA office to register if you are not attending the conference but would like to register for a pre- or post-conference training.

What to Wear:

Temperatures in hotel meeting rooms often fluctuate dramatically from hot to cold. We suggest you dress in layers so that you can adjust your apparel for different room temperatures. Dress for the conference is business casual.


There will be adequate space for each conference attendee to attend a session at each time block. However, seating is limited in individual rooms.  Please arrive early for sessions if you wish to guarantee a seat. Be courteous to other attendees when entering or leaving a session. We cannot assure participation in specific, individual sessions.

Services for Persons with Disabilities:

AMTA is committed to insuring full participation for conference attendees with disabilities, i.e., physical, visual, hearing, etc.  Every attempt is made for full compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act. If you should require special accommodations to participate in the conference, please indicate your needs by checking the box on your registration form and contacting the AMTA National Office at least one month prior to the conference.  If you require an accessible room, inform the hotel at the time that you make your reservations.  Every effort will be made to ensure satisfactory participation.

A Word about Children:

Conference sessions and evening events are designed for a professional audience. Children under 10 years of age may not find these events and activities interesting.  Please plan to be considerate of other attendees. If you need childcare, the hotel concierge can give you information about a licensed childcare agency in the area. AMTA has not reviewed the quality of these services and accepts no responsibility. You are responsible for payment involved.

Smoking Policy:

Smoking is not allowed in the sessions, meeting rooms, or the Exhibit Hall.
