American Music Therapy Association Stands With Minnesota

January 27, 2026 03:20 PM
Graphic with the American Music Therapy Association logo and the words €œAmerican Music Therapy Association€ and €œSta nds with Minnesota€ above a dark blue silhouette of Minnesota; five adults stand arm-in-arm in front of the state on a soft blue gradient background.

We are horrified by the brutal deaths of Alex Pretti and Renee Good of Minnesota. Consistent with our professional values as music therapists — and the ethical obligation to respect and protect the safety, dignity, and humanity of all people — we strongly condemn this loss of life and the ongoing trauma inflicted by violent confrontations and instability.  Exposure to continued violence and long-term fear not only impacts individuals emotionally and psychologically, but also has profound and lasting consequences for families and communities.  We affirm that all people deserve safety and security, dignity, and humane treatment, and that no one should live in fear of harm, discrimination, or violence.  AMTA stands with Minnesota and is encouraged by your ongoing advocacy and community involvement.  Our larger community can advocate by contacting your legislators to demand meaningful accountability and human rights safety and by supporting StandwithMinnesota.com for a curated list of organizations providing assistance during this time. AMTA is developing resources to support the larger community addressing de-escalation, trauma-informed music therapy, and ethical thinking.
