Dr. Elizabeth Stegemöller Appointed as Incoming Co-Lead Editor of Journal of Music Therapy

The American Music Therapy Association (AMTA) is excited to announce the appointment of Elizabeth Stegemöller, PhD, MT-BC as the new Co-Lead Editor of the Journal of Music Therapy (JMT). Professor Stegemöller commences her duties in January 2026 working with Co-Lead Editors, Dr. Kimberly Sena Moore and Dr. Blythe LaGasse. Dr. Stegemöller brings considerable experience to the position, having served the journal as a member of the Editorial Board as well as serving in an Editorial role for several other peer reviewed journals. 

Dr. Stegemöller completed her undergraduate degrees in Music Therapy and Biology from the University of Missouri – Kansas City. Following her degrees, she worked as a clinical music therapist before returning to graduate school, earning her doctoral degree in Neuroscience at Northwestern University then completing a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Florida. She is currently a tenured Professor and Associate Chair in the Department of Kinesiology at Iowa State University. Dr. Stegemöller maintains weekly music therapy and community choral groups in her clinical practice specializing in persons with Parkinson’s Disease and related movement disorders. 

In commenting on her appointment, Elizabeth noted her respect and admiration of JMT’s current Lead Editors and is grateful for the opportunity to transition to this role working with the entire editorial team. Dr. Stegemöller pledges to work collaboratively with the team to continue to highlight and expand the important role of music therapy and music-based intervention research  in health and education. Elizabeth expressed her keen desire for JMT to continue to grow as a premiere resource for excellence in music therapy research, including interdisciplinary research in music-based interventions.
