he American Music Therapy Association invites applicants for four new Associate Editor positions. Two Associate Editors will be appointed to the Journal of Music Therapy (JMT) and two to Music Therapy Perspectives (MTP).
Two Associate Editor positions will support manuscript reviews, processing, assigning, evaluating manuscripts and communicating with authors. This reflects an additional position that mirrors the current work of Associate Editors Felicity Baker (JMT) and Jennifer Jones (MTP) to support the workload of each journal.
Two additional positions (one for each journal), Associate Editor-Communications, reflect a new initiative to advance the ways journal content is communicated within and outside the music therapy community, coordinating with Oxford University Press (OUP) in using media such as Facebook, Twitter, and blogs. These position dovetail with OUP and their future plans with SilverChair, and embrace different ways of communicating about music therapy, specifically our research.

Position Descriptions
Associate Editor – With a Focus on Manuscript Review (one additional appointment for each journal)
Working closely with the Editor-In-Chief, the Associate Editor will serve a central role in processing and reviewing manuscript submissions. This may include screening initial submissions, selecting and assigning reviewers, managing the review process, and working with the Editor-In-Chief to decide review outcomes. A central skill required for the associate editor is the ability to edit and work with authors on manuscripts, understanding the perspective, methodological integrity and overall writing quality of each submission when doing so. Associate Editors will also meet several times during the year with the Editor-In-Chief (conference call) and attend the annual Editorial Board meeting held during the AMTA national conference.
Applicants should possess:
- An active publication record
- Excellent organizational skills
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Experience in an editorial role (journal editor, book editor, thesis/doctoral supervision, etc.)
- Experience in a journal review process (e.g., a reviewer)
- Prior service on the journal’s Editorial Board (preferred, but not required)
- Demonstrated ability to work in a team
- Desire and ability to dedicate up to 5 hours per week to Associate Editor responsibilities
Associate Editor- Communications (one appointment for each journal)
Working closely with the Editor-In-Chief, the Associate Editor-Communications will serve a central role in communicating journal content to AMTA members through social networks such as Facebook, twitter and blogs. In addition, the Associate Editor with work with the Communications Department at Oxford
University Press to enhance the interface between journal content and the broader community of scholars and consumers in the United States and Europe. Here an emphasis is placed on the interface between music therapy research, clinical practice and current events that may enhance understanding of music therapy for consumers and researchers outside the field. Associate Editors will also meet several times during the year with the Editor-In-Chief (conference call) and attend the annual Editorial Board meeting held during the AMTA national conference.
Applicants should possess:
- An active publication record
- Excellent organizational skills
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Active engagement and working knowledge of various social media platforms/outlets (e.g. Facebook, Twitter, etc.)
- Experience in an editorial role (blog, newsletter publication, journal editor, book editor, thesis/doctoral supervision, etc.)
- Experience in a journal review process (e.g., a reviewer or author)
- Prior service on the journal’s Editorial Board (preferred, but not required)
- Demonstrated ability to work in a team
- Desire and ability to dedicate up to 5 hours per week to Associate Editor responsibilities
Note: Associate Editors are able to submit manuscripts for peer review/publication consideration to the journals for which they are serving. These submissions would be assigned to the Editor-in-Chief or non-submitting Associate Editor to ensure the blind review process is maintained.
