Since 2005, AMTA and CBMT have collaborated on a State Recognition Operational Plan. The primary purpose of this plan is to get music therapy and the MT-BC credential recognized by individual states so that citizens can more easily access our services.The AMTA Government Relations staff and the CBMT Regulatory Affairs staff provide guidance and technical support to state task forces throughout the country as they work towards state recognition.

The Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) was signed by President Obama on December 10, 2015. ESSA marks the first overhaul of the nation's main elementary and secondary education law since the No Child Left Behind Act in 2002. This bipartisan measure reauthorizes the nation’s national education law, the 50-year-old Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA).

The 2015 edition of this document is available free of charge for current AMTA members in Member Resources>Job Center>Resources and Links section. Available for purchase by non-2015 members in the AMTA online bookstore.

The American Music Therapy Association invites applicants for four new Associate Editor positions. Two Associate Editors will be appointed to the Journal of Music Therapy (JMT) and two to Music Therapy Perspectives (MTP).

The American Music Therapy Association (AMTA) releases proceedings from the historic and innovative research symposium, “IMPROVING ACCESS AND QUALITY: MUSIC THERAPY RESEARCH 2025” (MTR2025).
