AMTA-member, Tom Sweitzer, is working with an award-winning documentary team, Director Susan Koch and Producer Wendy Thompson-Marquez, who are in the midst of telling a music therapy story of which we can all be proud. AMTA officials met with Tom, Susan, and Wendy, and are impressed with their grasp of music therapy and their passion for telling the story.

Congratulations to members of the California Music Therapy Task Force, whose advocacy leadership over the past five years, along with grassroots participation from state music therapists, has resulted in the inclusion of the MT-BC credential in the state's Special Education Regulations.

AMTA’s role is to preserve, protect, and safeguard the practice of evidence-based music therapy so that vulnerable populations can be assured that they are receiving treatment that is indicated from qualified music therapists. To that end, AMTA leaders questioned officials from the Global Alliance for Arts & Health about their new “certification” program.

Minnesota Governor Mark Dayton signed Chapter 247, SF 1722: This bill adds art therapist, music therapist, and audiologist to the list of positions defined as teachers. This passed the House 76-53 and the Senate 49-13.

AMTA & CBMT meet with National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization to discuss recognition of the role of music therapy and national board certification in hospice and palliative care settings. The NHPCO leadership team wholeheartedly supports services offered in their settings by MT-BCs and invited future collaborative initiatives.

The LIVESTRONG Foundation solicited and offered thirteen $15,600 grants to fund music therapy programs with a Board Certified Music Therapist at sites nationwide.

Music therapy program offered at Walter Reed, in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts in collaboration with the American Music Therapy Association. The program has a board-certified therapist with training in the use of music, instruments, songwriting, interpretation and rhythmic motor movement to help patients heal.

Members of the Master’s Level Entry (MLE) Subcommittee continue to work on their charge to analyze data collected, identify additional questions/information needed for an informed decision, & develop a plan to answer questions & provide information. Slides from the Jacksonville conference presentation “Voices of the MLE – A 2013 Review” which summarized work in 2012 and 2013 as well as a looked at work that needs to continue in 2014 are available. Subcommittee members welcome feedback.
