Outcome of 2012 AMTA Clinician Based Research Award
Research on the use of music therapy for post-operative pain management is available in the latest edition of Pain Management Nursing. This research was conducted by Kirsten Nelson, MA, MT-BC, Mary Adamek, PhD, MT-BC and Charmaine Kleiber, PhD, RN, FAAN at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. The American Music Therapy Association provided funding for this project through the 2012 Clinician Based Research Award. The article entitled, “Relaxation training and postoperative music therapy for adolescents undergoing spinal fusion surgery” describes the use of music-assisted relaxation to reduce post-operative pain and anxiety experienced in conjunction with physical therapy. This randomized control study evaluated the effect of introducing music-assisted relaxation training to adolescents before surgery. All subjects received music therapy after surgery and demonstrated significant reductions in pain and anxiety from pre-therapy to post-therapy.
