Please Respond to the 2021 AMTA Member and Music Therapist Survey

Survey

2021 AMTA Member and Music Therapist Survey

Help us advocate for the music therapy profession!

One of the most important things you can do this year as a music therapist or a member of the American Music Therapy Association (AMTA) is complete the annual AMTA survey. We ask all members and music therapists working in the music therapy profession to participate in this survey, which helps us draw an accurate picture of the music therapy profession. The information you provide helps to compile our annual workforce analysis each year, used by music therapists in creating and negotiating jobs and salaries, researchers, and by administrators looking to add music therapy to their list of services. Please go to the following URL no later than September 15, 2021 and enter your survey responses. Be sure and scroll down inside the survey, click "Next" at the bottom of each page and be sure to click "Done" at the end of the survey to submit your responses.

Please respond to the survey using the link:

About the AMTA Member/Music Therapist Survey

Responses to this survey are used for gathering comprehensive data detailing the profession of music therapy.  Survey results are used for a variety of reasons including public affairs, government relations, funding, job acquisition and improvement, and requests for information for research purposes. For the most accurate picture of the profession, we need each and every practicing music therapist to complete this survey every year. The information you provide helps us gather an accurate picture of the profession of music therapy in the United States. What follows are some frequently asked questions and answers about the survey to help you to understand the purpose and scope of this important yearly project.

Is the information I provide confidential?

Yes! The informational questions you answer are used for no other purpose than to gather information for a Workforce Analysis of the music therapy community. Your anonymity is protected. Responses to financial and personal information will be reported in aggregate statistical form only, so we hope you will feel free to answer these questions candidly. If, however, you prefer not to answer any question, just skip it and go on to the next one.

Why do you need my salary information?

Probably the most important question on the survey is the one about salary. It is through your responses that we determine average income based on region, population, setting, ages served, years in the profession, etc. This information is used, not just by the American Music Therapy Association, but also by your music therapist colleagues to help them to set salaries, negotiate increases, create jobs, and determine fair and appropriate fees. It is also used by researchers. Please remember that personal information provided is not reported and kept strictly confidential. Only aggregate, non-identifiable summary data is released in the summary analyses. Of course, if you still don’t feel comfortable answering this question, you are welcome to skip it, but the more responses from survey respondents, the more accurate the salary information we report becomes.

What about my address?

Because this survey is anonymous and conducted online, we don’t ask you about your address or contact information; you are only asked the area in which you currently live (state, country, and region).  If you’d like to change your address or other information on your AMTA record, you can do so by contacting the AMTA national office or going to the AMTA website (www.musictherapy.org) and logging into your personal AMTA online account - separate from this survey - to update your contact information. (Reminder: When you do this, be sure to also note your settings and populations and include self-employed/private practice in your AMTA online record in order to receive the best chance of being included in member referral lists sent to consumers seeking music therapy services!)

I filled out a survey last year, do I need to fill one out again?

YES! Information changes and because the survey is completely anonymous, we cannot access prior year’s survey responses. We need each and every music therapist to return the survey every year in order to be able to report the most accurate data.

I’m not an AMTA member, can I fill out this survey too?

YES! While we do ask whether you’re a member or not, you do not need to be a member to complete the survey.  We need each and every music therapist to return the survey every year in order to report the most accurate data.

Why do you need to know how many people I’ve served?

The questions about the number of individuals and facilities served help us to extrapolate how many people in the U.S. receive music therapy services each year. We are looking for the total number of individuals who you served over the course of a year—not necessarily the number of sessions you provided for one person. Even if you don’t know the exact number of people, your best estimate is appreciated.

What information is published?

The "AMTA Workforce Analysis" will be published electronically in the form of .pdf document which you may purchase and download from the AMTA Online Store. Current AMTA members receive complimentary copies of this document (as well as previous years’ documents) as a benefit of their membership in AMTA.  Members may download the latest, as well as archived copies, of this report in the following ways after logging into the AMTA website:

Please feel free to access it in the manner that is most convenient for you.
