AMTA Government Relations Update 5-18-25
DESCRIPTION OF ISSUE
This week, the U.S. House of Representatives Energy and Commerce Committee passed out of markup its proposed budget cuts. This bill is now being combined with other Committee bills into a full budget package. Speaker Mike Johnson is working with the majority to finalize details this weekend so the Budget Committee can vote on the bill. If passed, the bill then moves to the Rules Committee and then on to the full House floor for a vote sometime this week.
For more information about how this bill could impact people with disabilities, here is an FAQ from the Disability and Aging Collaborative and the Consortium for Constituents with Disabilities (CCD). AMTA is a member of CCD and participates in four of its Task Forces: Health; Education; Developmental Disabilities, Autism and Family Support; and Veterans Ad Hoc.
HOW YOU CAN HELP
Although you may have called previously, please consider taking 5 minutes out of your day and calling your U.S. Representative again this week to express your concerns about the budget bill. It contains harmful cuts and changes to Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act that will result in millions of people with disabilities and older adults losing healthcare coverage.
Call your representative TODAY and leave a message urging them to vote NO on the reconciliation bill when it comes to the House floor.
