The Journal of Music Therapy (JMT) is seeking applications and nominations for the position of Associate Editor – Statistical Editor.
This volunteer role will support the journal’s editorial process by providing statistical expertise for submitted research manuscripts. The Statistical Editor will work collaboratively with the Co-Editors and Associate Editors to help uphold methodological rigor and strengthen the quality of published research.
Current professional membership in the American Music Therapy Association (AMTA) is provided gratis as a benefit of service to the journal and in support of AMTA’s mission.

Position Description
The Associate Editor – Statistical Editor is a volunteer position responsible for supporting the peer review process for research manuscripts submitted to the JMT through expert statistical review and guidance. The Statistical Editor helps ensure that statistical methods are appropriately applied, clearly reported, and accurately interpreted.
This position works closely with the Co-Editors and other Associate Editors to support authors and reviewers, strengthen manuscript quality, and uphold the journal’s standards for methodological integrity. The Statistical Editor will meet periodically with the Co-Editors and other Associate Editors via videoconference and is encouraged to attend the JMT Editorial Board meeting held approximately two times per year.
The Associate Editor – Statistical Editor assists the Co-Editors with:
- Evaluating the statistical rigor of submitted manuscripts
- Reviewing statistical methods, analyses, and interpretation of results
- Providing clear, constructive statistical feedback to authors and editors
- Participating in meetings of the editorial team and editorial board
Required Qualifications
- Advanced training or substantial expertise in statistics, biostatistics, quantitative methods, or a closely related area
- Demonstrated experience evaluating research methodology and statistical analyses
- Excellent organizational skills
- Excellent and respectful written and oral communication skills
- Experience with peer review processes as an author and/or reviewer
- Demonstrated ability to work on a team
- Desire and ability to dedicate an average of 2 - 4 hours each week to Associate Editor responsibilities
- Desire to serve as an ambassador for AMTA and the music therapy profession
Term of Service
The term of service coincides with that of the lead Co-Editors, currently through 2030, with the option to renew the appointment. This position will begin in Fall 2026 with an orientation and gradual assumption of duties.
