In this AMTA-Pro podcast, Dr. Deanna Hanson-Abromeit overviews an article published in Music Therapy Perspectives, Volume 33, “A Conceptual Methodology to Define the Therapeutic Function of Music.” The article proposes an ante-hoc worksheet to articulate the Therapeutic Function of Music (TFM) Plan.

The American Music Therapy Association (AMTA) presents an historic and innovative research symposium, “Improving Access and Quality: Music Therapy Research 2025” (MTR 2025), beginning the evening of July 16, 2015 and ending at noon on July 18. This visionary special event is designed to recommend guidance for future research in music therapy and was made possible by a generous donation from David’s Fund and Tom and Lucy Ott.

The White House Conference on Aging will be held on July 13, 2015. This year marks the 50th anniversary of Medicare, Medicaid, and the Older Americans Act, as well as the 80th anniversary of Social Security. The 2015 White House Conference on Aging is an opportunity to recognize the importance of these key programs as well as to look ahead to the next decade. AMTA and CBMT are excited to announce that, on Wednesday, July 1, 2015, Governor Kate Brown of Oregon signed into law HB 2796. This legislation creates a music therapy license in Oregon through the Health Licensing Office. Many thanks to the members of the Oregon Task Force (Jodi Winnwalker-Chair, Lillieth Grand, Dawn Iwamasa, Laura Beer, Chris Korb, Ted Owen, Melissa Potts, and Adam Young) and to all the music therapists in Oregon for their work, dedication, and advocacy for this legislation.

In November 2013, the AMTA Assembly of Delegates passed a revision of the Professional Competencies. This revision includes 3 new competencies as well as streamlined music foundation competencies. Due to the new competencies, the Assembly voted to make them effective on August 1, 2015. This allows academic programs and internship sites to update curriculum and documents. If it would be helpful to see the old & new side-by-side, you can find a comparison document in the AMTA member toolkit.
