It is with deep sadness that AMTA mourns the death of Tom Ott with his passing on March 19, 2026. Tom and Lucy Ott have been long time supporters of music therapy. The Ott’s generosity included many dimensions of music therapy, including the John Cali School of Music at Montclair, music therapy clinical training and the Arthur Flagler Fultz Research Award with AMTA.

The Arthur Flagler Fultz Research Award is an annual research grant of $20,000. It was first awarded in 1999 by the then newly formed American Music Therapy Association (AMTA) and generously supported by David’s Fund from Tom and Lucy Ott. The Award is designed to encourage, promote, and support research towards evidence-informed music therapy practice.

AMTA is seeking Volunteer Reviewers for the 2026 Arthur Flagler Fultz Research Award Committee. Expectations include: Bulk of work to be completed in July 2026 Review 6-8 proposals using a rubric and rating guide 1 month to complete assigned reviews

The American Music Therapy Association (AMTA) is excited to announce the appointment of Elizabeth Stegemöller, PhD, MT-BC as the new Co-Lead Editor of the Journal of Music Therapy (JMT). Professor Stegemöller commences her duties in January 2026 working with Co-Lead Editors, Dr. Kimberly Sena Moore and Dr. Blythe LaGasse.

The "Journal of Music Therapy" and "Music Therapy Perspectives" announce two calls for papers. Each journal is hosting Guest Co-Editors for a special focus examining topics in social justice and equity with music therapy research, practice and education. It is anticipated that accepted peer reviewed manuscripts will be published in each journal in 2021. Details on the call for papers from each journal are noted below.

AMTA congratulates investigator teams receiving research awards in response to the Sound Health funding opportunity. Special congratulations go to music therapist, Dr. Sheri Robb, and her team at Indiana University for their award examining dose-response and effects of an Active Music Engagement intervention on biomarkers among young oncology patients and their parents.
